This morning Pete and I visited 2 more schools in Mwanza that we have previously supported whilst the other 4 decided to spend the day by the pool.
We had arranged to meet Bruno about 10am so we could have a leisurely breakfast before going out for the day. At breakfast this morning we were also joined by Filex who will be our safari guide when we head off to the Serengeti tomorrow.
Pete and I then met up with Bruno and Frank and drove out round Lake Victoria to Kabanganga School.
This school had previously been loaned 3 computers and a printer and this year we were loaning them 1 further computer based on their performance last year. When we arrived at the school it was very quiet. We were met by Emmanual, the IT Teacher who told us most of the children were attending a Divisional Sports Day, so weren’t around. However a few children had stayed behind to meet us. We saw them using the computers and we then handed over the new one plus a football.
We then headed off to Bugogwa School which was close by. They had received one laptop last year but had used it really well so we decided that this year we would loan them the standard package of 3 computers and a printer.
On arrival at Bugogwa we were met by lots of children and the Head Teacher. All the children seemed really excited.
The Head Teacher had set up a small presentation area where we were taken to present the computers. We were soon surrounded by loads of kids, some even climbing trees (to collect fruit as well as to get a view of us). One little boy even showed us a car he had built. Everyone wanted to be involved. We handed over the computers and then the teacher gave a speech, thanking us, as did one of the pupils.
I then asked if we could have a look around the school. The head teacher told us they have 1526 pupils, 22 teachers and 7 classrooms. Year groups vary from 150 - 350 pupils. Each year group is split in half, with one group attending school in the morning, the other in the afternoon. The desks are crammed into every classroom, there is no room to move.
The Head teacher then shows us the room they will use for the computers and also a group of children who are members of the “Computer Club”.
After our tour around the school we returned to the hotel and met up with the other for an afternoon relaxing around the pool.
That evening went out to a local restaurant with Bruno and the rest of the Actt Mwanza staff. It was a very sociable evening, accompanied by local fish, bananas, and chips. Around 9.30 we returned to the hotel for an early night before our Safari tomorrow.
