Day 8

Today we moved from the central Serengeti to the rim of Ngorongoro Crater. Filex gave us a bit of a lie in and for the first time we actually woke before our alarm. We had a nice breakfast and left the lodge about 8.30.

Early on we saw jackals, giraffes and then a large herd of elephants. Caf and I were very happy. We stopped and watched as they walked across the road in front of us.

A little later we saw a leopard up a tree, looking very relaxed. Look carefully at the first photo and you will just see its tail hanging down from the branch. As we then drove further south we saw a lion walking through the long grass, more jackals, hippos, baboons and hartebeest.

By now we were quite far south and have caught up with the migration again. Today the herds are even bigger, sometimes running at great speed, sometimes walking slowly and grazing. The photos cannot capture the sheer enormity of the herds. It was amazing. Animals everywhere as far as the eye can see. Simon took some video and I will try and post that later.

As we drove on there were eventually some gaps in the animals and then more would appear again.  We also saw more lions.....look closely at the edge of the water. Obviously the migration meant there was plenty of food around for them.........and also for the vultures.

By lunchtime we were at the Naabi Hill gate and stopped at the picnic area to eat. Filex went and did the paperwork and we did the walk up to the view point and saw a few lizards along the way. All the permits are dealt with electronically so the process is much quicker than it used to be and we were soon ready to leave the Serengeti and drive up to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater where we stayed the night at Rhino Lodge. Before we got to the lodge we stopped for a few photos.

We really liked Rhino Lodge. It was simpler than the other lodges but the rooms were comfortable, it had a nice bar area with an open fire and the food was good. We were early to bed that night as were leaving at 5.30am the following morning.
